A final look at offseason signings, Jones hurt

What a weird offseason. Following a summer where the likes of Wade Redden, Brian Campbell, and Christobal Huet were signed for over 5.5 million each, the salary cap finally came into effect. Patience wasn't a virtue for free agent players this summer; if you waited, you lost out.

Let's review how little some of the "big" available free agents ended up making:

What he signed for: 1 year, 1.4 million
What similar players signed for in the first week of the offseason:

Dwayne Roloson: 2 years, 5 million

C Manny Malhotra

2008-2009 Salary: 1.2 million
What he signed for: 1 year, 700K
What similar players signed for in the first week of the offseason:

Sammi Pahlsson: 3 years, 7.95 million

LW Alex Tanguay

2008-2009 Salary: 5.25 million
What he signed for: 1 year, 2.5 million
What similar players signed for in the first week of the offseason:

Brian Gionta: 5 years, 25 million
Martin Havlat: 6 years, 30 million

D Mathieu Schneider

2008-2009 Salary: 5.625 million
What he signed for: 1 year, 1.55 million
What similar players signed for in the first week of the offseason:

Jaroslav Spacek: 3 years, 11.5 million
Adrian Aucoin: 1 year, 2.25 million

David Jones is out indefinitely with a bruised chest. If you're keeping count, that's two Avalanche players injured before the start of the season.

Time to bust out the bubble wrap.
